Cannabis, Categorization, and Derealization

What is “Derealization?”

Derealization is something anyone can experience. It makes the person affected feel as though the people and objects around them are off, or “unreal.” Their surroundings become surreal, and dream-like, but the person also realizes something is wrong. It is important to note that derealization is not the same as having a hallucination.

Drug Categorization

Cannabis is rather uniquely categorized. Unlike nearly all other drugs, cannabis tends to be debated as to what type it is. This is mainly because of the variable effects it has on people.

To understand exactly what cannabis is, first, it must be understood what the other drugs are. Below are the most well-known categories of drugs.

Drugs from or designed to mimic opium poppies. These drugs are highly addictive and tend to dull pain and emotions. A few examples include morphine (dreamer, morph, God’s Drug), fentanyl, codeine, and oxycodone (oxy).

These are also called “uppers,” and cause the human body to increase its energy levels. These drugs lead to extreme alertness, excitement, and confidence. A few examples include caffeine, cocaine (crack, coke, snow), and methamphetamine (meth, speed, crank, ice).

Referred to as “downers,” these drugs are designed to slow the heart rate, leading to extreme periods of calmness. In some cases, especially when speaking of drug abuse, depressants are used to achieve euphoria. A few examples include alcohol, methaqualone (quaaludes, roofies), diazepam (Valium), and alprazolam (Xanax).

Not to state the obvious, but hallucinogens are drugs that purposefully cause hallucinations. A few examples include LSD, PCP, Ketamine, and “bath salts.”

These are vapors that can give a very dangerous high. The vapors are toxic and cause mind-altering effects. A few examples include aerosols (spray paint), solvents (bleach), gasses (gasoline vapors), and nitrates (leather cleaner).

Steroids are commonly used to “bulk up” or, more appropriately, act as natural hormones to reduce inflammation. A few examples include Anadrol-50, Oxandrin, and Winstrol.

Finally, Marijuana is an extraordinary drug due to how differently it can affect people. To some people it’s a stimulant, for others it’s a depressant. Marijuana always comes from the plants Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. Mary Jane, hash, weed, pot, and grass are all nicknames for Marijuana.

Helping Combat Cannabis-Induced Derealization

If the only goal is to help ease stress or relieve pain, choosing a cannabinoid like CBD could work instead. CBD is an excellent alternative to THC as it should cause no psychological side effects.

Always talk with your doctor before trying a new, powerful drug like THC. And, if you wish to be at far less risk of side effects, consider trying CBD first.
